Bifocal Lenses
Glasses Gallery bifocal lenses are designed for people who need different prescriptions for near and far vision.
Unlike single vision lenses, bifocals have two sections, the upper part of the lens, which is generally used for distance vision, while the lower part is for near vision. By combining two lenses into one, they are a convenient way to see and read easily at all times and eliminate the need to carry two pairs of glasses at all times.
Bifocal lenses have a very distinct line dividing the two sections. They are typically placed so that the line rests at the same height as the person's lower eyelid. Then, when the person drops his eyes downward to read, the eyes naturally seek out the near-vision section of the lens.
Though progressive lenses are now more popular with people with age related farsightedness or presbyopia, in some cases bifocals are prescribed for children and young adults who have eye focusing problems that cause eye strain when they read. The reason is that, with the bottom part customized for near vision, it reduces the amount of focusing effort required to see near objects clearly. And some research also suggests that with bifocal lenses, children's myopia problem may well be controlled since there is less focusing demand for reading and near work.
